In 2001, Renault returned as a constructor after buying Benetton, changing the team name the following year. It had a strategy to take the world title, something it would achieve in 2005, but 2004 represented an important technical turning point. Promoted from test driver to the team in 2003, Fernanado Alonso had an impressive 2004.
